CAI Talk - Challenges for AI in Drone Delivery

Challenges for AI in Drone Delivery

Abstract: Drone delivery has emerged as one of the most promising applications of autonomous systems, with the potential to transform logistics, healthcare supply chains, and consumer services. However, deploying drones at scale requires overcoming significant challenges in artificial intelligence (AI), ranging from navigation and safety to regulatory compliance and real-time decision-making.

In this talk, Dr. Bapi Chatterjee and Dr. Przemysław Mariusz Kornatowski from IDEAS NCBR will examine the critical AI challenges that must be addressed to enable reliable and efficient drone delivery. The session will highlight how advances in perception, planning, and control can be integrated to ensure drones operate safely in complex, dynamic environments.

Key themes will include:

  • Robust navigation and obstacle avoidance in urban and rural settings.

  • Real-time decision-making under uncertainty and dynamic conditions.

  • Integration of AI with communication networks for coordinated fleet management.

  • Addressing safety, security, and ethical concerns in autonomous delivery systems.

  • Regulatory and infrastructural challenges in scaling drone delivery.

The presentation will combine technical insights with practical perspectives, showcasing how AI research is shaping the future of drone logistics. By tackling these challenges, the speakers will illustrate the path toward making drone delivery a safe, scalable, and impactful reality.
