Abstract: The planet is undergoing a sixth mass extinction event, where an eighth of all species may become extinct by 2100. Insects being nearly half of all described living species on Earth, their "apocalypse" significantly increases the risk of the breakdown of ecosystem functions on which human society depends. Hyper-diversity and abundance have always posed a challenge in the automated and standardised monitoring of insects. In this talk, I will present a global partnership work at the intersection of novel insect camera traps, machine learning, and software infrastructure for a comprehensive biodiversity assessment at scale.
